Medium voltage marine cables are designed to handle higher voltage levels and are commonly used for power transmission and distribution in marine and offshore applications. The structure of a medium voltage marine cable typically includes the following components:

1. Conductor:

  • Material: Copper
  • Purpose: Conducts electrical power at medium voltage levels.
  • Design: Stranded conductors for flexibility and conductivity.

2. Conductor Shield:

  • Material: Semiconductive layer.
  • Purpose: Provides a smooth interface between the insulation and the conductor, ensuring uniform electrical stress distribution.

3. Insulation:

  • Material: EPR, XLPE is commonly used for medium voltage cables.
  • Purpose: Provides electrical insulation to prevent current leakage and ensures the integrity of the cable.

4. Insulation Shield:

  • Material: Semiconductive layer.
  • Purpose: Enhances the electric field distribution and ensures a smooth transition between the insulation and the metallic layers.

5. Metallic Shield:

  • Type: Usually a metallic layer, such as copper tape or wire braid.
  • Purpose: Acts as a grounding and shielding mechanism, minimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and providing mechanical protection.

6. Filler Materials:

  • Purpose: Used to maintain the cable's round shape and fill any voids between components.

7. Binder Tape:

  • Purpose: Holds the components together and provides an additional layer of protection.

8. Metallic Armoring (Optional):

  • Type: Galvanized steel wires or tapes.
  • Purpose: Provides mechanical protection against external forces, such as crushing or impact.

9. Outer Sheath:

  • Material: Neoprene, chlorinated polyethylene,Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) compounds.
  • Purpose: Protects the cable from environmental factors, abrasion, and chemical exposure. LSZH is preferred for its low smoke and toxicity characteristics.

Technical Parameters:

  1. Voltage Rating:

    • Typically in the range of 6 kV to 30 kV or higher.
  2. Current-Carrying Capacity:

    • Dependent on the conductor size, insulation material, and installation conditions.
  3. Temperature Rating:

    • Operating temperature range often between -40°C to +90°C.
  4. Bending Radius:

    • Specifies the minimum radius for safe bending without damaging the cable.
  5. Certifications:

    • Compliance with relevant marine and industry standards.
